DUSHERA DATES : 13 Oct 2013, 03 Oct 2014, 22 Oct 2015.
Amongst the most important festivals in the State of Rajasthan,
celebrating the victory of Lord Ram (the ninth avtar of God Vishnu
the Preserver of life) against Ravan, the King of Lanka.
Ram was born in 5114 BCE, the eldest son of King Dashrath, and crown
prince of the kingdom of Ayodhya, located on the banks of river
Sarayu, 550 km East of modern New Delhi. Due to the machinations of
his stepmother who wished to see her own son, Bharat, become the
king of Ayodhya, Dashrath is forced to send Ram into exile for 14
years.
Accompanied by his wife Sita and his second brother, Laxman, the
trio face several challenges as they journey through India during
this time. And their greatest test comes when Sita is kidnapped by
Ravan, the King of Lanka. The plan that follows to rescue Sita leads
to a major war in which Ram and his allies are pitted against the
armies of Ravan.
Dushera marks the end of the battle after Ram slays Ravan and
rescues Sita, as also the end of Ram’s 14 year period of exile from
Ayodhya.
In the village : Witness the celebrations typical in rural India,
when village folk gather in the common square to burn the effigies
of the evil King Ravan, amidst great cheering, dance, music and
fireworks, signifying the razing of Lanka and the victory of Ram.
On this day, it is considered auspicious for martial races to pay
homage to their weapons, and other communities worship the tools of
their trade
Join the revelery and the feasting that celebrates the triumph of
good over evil.
